(서울=연합뉴스) 조 바이든 미국 대통령은 9일(현지시간) "민주주의를 강화하고 새롭게 하기 위해선 지속적 노력이 필요하다"며 각국의 노력을 당부했습니다.

바이든 대통령은 이날부터 이틀간 문재인 대통령을 포함해 약 110개국 정부와 시민사회, 민간 분야 관계자들을 초청해 화상으로 진행하는 '민주주의 정상회의' 모두 발언에서 "전세계적으로 민주주의가 우려스러운 도전에 직면한 상황에서, 민주주의는 챔피언을 필요로 한다"며 이같이 밝혔습니다.

바이든 대통령은 특히 "외부 독재자들은 전 세계에 영향력을 확대함으로써 그들의 힘을 키우고 억압적 정책을 정당화하려 한다"며 중국과 러시아를 직접 겨냥하기도 했습니다.

또 이날 전 세계적 민주주의 증진을 위해 모두 0억0천000만달러(한화 약 0천000억원)를 투자하겠다고 선언했는데요.

자유롭고 독립적인 언론 활동, 부패 척결, 민주주의 개혁, 민주주의를 위한 기술 지원, 자유롭고 공정한 선거 지원 등 5개 분야 활동에 지원할 예정입니다.

세계보건기구(WHO) 사무총장이 자신이 선출될 당시 중국과 거래가 있었다고 말한 마이크 폼페이오 미국 국무장관을 정면으로 비판했다.

APㆍAFP통신 등에 따르면 테워드로스 아드하놈 거브러여수스(현지시간) WHO 사무총장이 23일(현지시간) 스위스 제네바 WHO 본부에서 열린 화상 언론 브리핑에서 "그 발언은 사실이 아니고 용납할 수 없다"고 밝혔다. 아무런 근거 없는 말이라고 덧붙였다. 이어 "WHO의 유일한 초점은 생명을 구하는 것"이라면서 "이런 발언에 주의를 돌리지 않을 것이며 국제 사회가 동요하지 않길 바란다"고 강조했다.

이번 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 사태의 정치화에 대한 우려도 강하게 표했다. 거브러여수스 사무총장은 "코로나19 바이러스는 국경, 이념, 정당을 따지지 않는다"면서 "정치와 당파주의가 코로나19 사태를 악화시켰다"고 말했다. 현재 가장 큰 위협은 "코로나19 팬데믹(세계적 대유행)의 정치화"라면서 "코로나19 정치를 격리해야 한다"고 의견을 피력했다.

영국 언론에 따르면 폼페이오 장관은 21일 영국 내각 인사 등과의 비공개 모임에서 확실한 정보라면서 거부러여수스 사무총장이 2017년 선출될 때 중국과 모종의 거래가 있었다고 말했다. 또 "WHO가 사실상 중국에 매수됐다"며 "과학에 기반을 두지 않은 정치적인 기관"이라고 맹비난한 것으로 전해졌다. 미국은 코로나19 사태를 겪으면서 WHO와 마찰을 빚어왔고 결국 지난 7일 WHO 탈퇴를 공식 선언했다. 탈퇴는 1년 후인 내년 7월에 확정된다.
